It was Edward Russ who was inspired by the California mission architecture and suggested it to Poole.

Edward Russ was a prominent lawyer who was chair of the New Jersey State Board of Education’s Normal School Committee.

Currently designing Montclair State University is university architect Frank Cunha III. He has helped continue the designs of the university since 1997, when he became a member of the facility. He has since had projects that included the student recreation center, center for environmental science, school of music, school of nursing, and historic renovations and additions to college hall.

He continues to design within the historic Spanish mission revival style.

George E. Poole (1903)

Designed the school after popular mission revival style architecture. The architecture was inspired by historic Spanish missionary architecture from California.

Uncovered in January 2005, the new MSU Athletics logo design is more energetic, exciting and aggressive. It shows the Red Hawk as a strong competitor and is consistent with the design of modern athletic logos.

Montclair State opened up for classes on September 16, 1908

MSU is build on the top of the Lenape (la-nah-pay) branch of the Delaware tribe territory. In memorialization to the Lenape History MSU named our athletic teams “the Indians”. From 1917 Indians became red hawks that were named after the red tailed hawk in 1989 due to the reactions of Native Americans.
